The paint correction masterclass: Professional techniques

Paint correction is the "high-art" of the detailing industry. It is the technical process of removing surface defects (swirls, scratches, oxidation) to restore a vehicle's finish to better-than-factory brilliance. For a professional B2B shop, paint correction is a foundational step for applying Ceramic Coatings. This masterclass covers the SOPs for technique, equipment, and environment.

Precision Machine and Pad Selection

Technical precision starts with choosing the right tool for the job.

1. DA (Dual Action) vs. Rotary

For most professional shops, the Dual Action (DA) polisher is the standard. It is safer to use, generates less heat, and is much easier for Employees to learn without the risk of "burning" through clear coat.

2. Pad and Product Chemistry

Use a systematic "Test Spot" approach. Always start with the least aggressive combination and only increase if necessary.

  • Cutting Pads (Microfiber/Wool): For heavy defect removal.
  • Polishing Pads (Foam): For refining the finish and removing holograms.
  • Finishing Pads: For maximizing gloss and "jewelling" the paint.

The Environment: Lighting and QC

You cannot fix what you cannot see.

3. Specialized Detail Shop Lighting

Professional correction requires high-CRI (Color Rendering Index) lighting.

  • Ambient Lighting: High-output LEDs to light the whole shop.
  • Inspection Lighting: Handheld and tripod-mounted lights that mimic sunlight to reveal micro-swirls. These should be a core part of your Mobile Rig.

4. Technical Finishing SOPs

Once the correction is complete, the paint must be "stripped." Use a high-quality panel wipe to remove all polishing oils. If you skip this, you will have bonding issues with your Coating Workflow.
